The inspiration to work with wood and steel came to me only quite recently after completing a water wheel restoration. The wheel had not moved for over 15 years after the timber in an earlier reconstruction had finally come to the end of its useful life. The sense of satisfaction on seeing the wheel turn again was huge and left me with a need to continue using / making with timber and steel – it is difficult to decide which is most enjoyable - working in the workshop with wood or hand forging steel using a hand cranked charcoal forge.

I am very lucky to have a workshop next to the wheel so I can see and hear it operating – this gives extra inspiration when needed – but to run machines with it in the workshop would be fantastic – maybe in the future!
